The Ultimate PR

Just in time for our Eurocon, the Guardian newspaper (16 October 2016) has published a long, lively guide to Barcelona’s best bookshops, entitled “A bookworm’s tour of Barcelona’s librerías”, kicking off at—guess where?—Gigamesh… even though the article is about bookshops of all kinds… and taking in the CCCB’s own bookshop with special mention of Ramon Llull (see Progress Report 5).  We did not bribe the Guardian to co-ordinate with our Eurocon, honest! Eurocon Barcelona Progress Report #5

Welcome to our Progress Report 5.  We may (or may not) send a short final-final PR later this month, but otherwise: looking forward to seeing you all in Barcelona! Stop Press We’re delighted to announce that we are now officially in collaboration with the European Space Agency! The ESA is lending us a discarded re-entered piece of the Hubble Space Telescope to display during Eurocon. Two astrophysicists who work for the ESA will give a talk about their work.  And the ESA will share our announcements on its social networks. Needless to say we are over the moon… oh wait, Hubble is in Earth orbit, not lunar orbit. Membership List Please go to the Membership List on our website to check that your names are written correctly.  And will anyone who bought multiple memberships using the same name please email info@eurocon2016.org as soon as possible with the real names (or badge names) of the other member or members so that we can prepare accurate badges. Registering on Arrival: On Thursday evening 3 November from 6.00 pm our Registration Desk is open in the convention hotel, Hotel Catalonia Ramblas, Carrer de Pelai, 28 (just beside Plaça de Catalunya where the bus from the airport arrives).  Our aim is to welcome members arriving on the rooftop terrace with bar, and socialise.  In case of rain, or the unexpected, we will all meet up in the hotel’s bar-hall downstairs. Eurocon Barcelona Progress Report # 4.1

June 11, 2016 Welcome to our Progress Report 4.1!  By now we have approximately 730 members.  The limit is 800. (Existing members: Please spread the word that buying a membership does not require booking accomodation yet—if our convention hotel and its partners fill up, there will still be accomodation of all types quite close to the convention. People who are thinking of joining are advised buy a membership now—because we are certain to have a waiting list of fans eager to buy an unwanted membership.) In our experience, the free WiFi of a hotel usually fails when lots of geeks are trying to use the WiFi at the same time.  For information about local SIM cards click here. Please will all members bringing children (under 16) email us their names and ages, quoting “Children” in the subject line, to info@eurocon2016.org. We hope to be able to offer children under 16 their own badges, and also special games and program items. Ignotus & Ictineu Awards Dinner The traditional Hispacon banquet, for announcing the winners of the Ignotus Awards of the Spanish National Association of SFF and Horror, will take place in the convention hotel on the Saturday evening in combination with the Catalan SF Society announcing its Ictineu Awards. The cost is 35 Euros, and all Eurocon members are welcome to join the banquet. If enough “foreigners” sign up, there will be interpretation of the announcements in English; the food speaks for itself. Vegetarian and Vegan options will be available, and also alternatives for special diets. For tickets, contact: ignotushispacon@gmail.com A message from the European SF Society (which presides over all Eurocons)...

Eurocon Barcelona Progress Report # 3.1

Happy New Year!—and Surprise!  This is a short interim progress report because of a few things. (1) You will very soon be able to book rooms on-line at the convention hotel, and its partners, at the reduced convention rate, securely as regards credit card details.  (This is in response to the concerns of some members about sending credit card details by e-mail.)  Just wait till 23 January, because the hotel has to fix a small technical problem.  After that: CLICK to book at CATALONIA HOTELS & RESORTS (We hope that, if members are able, they will book at the convention hotel, Hotel Catalonia Ramblas, or at one of its two partners nearby, because enough bookings means benefits for the Eurocon.) (2) As a member of BCon, you have the right to vote for the Spanish “Ignotus” Awards, which are given each year at Hispacon, the national convention combined this year with the Eurocon.  All material for the Ignotus Awards is in Spanish.  If you want to opt in to participate, please email us at info@eurocon2016.org with the subject heading “Ignotus”. By doing so, you agree to us sharing your email details with AEFCFT (La Asociación Española de Fantasía, Ciencia Ficción y Terror), and you will receive any materials submitted to AEFCFT. (3) Among other goodies, we hope—subject to sponsorship—to give every attending member of the Eurocon a memory stick (flash drive) containing Spanish SF anthologies in English translation.  If requested, and if practical, we will also put on the memory stick SF anthologies in English translation from other European countries.  We will not include individual story collections or books by...

Eurocon Barcelona Progress Report # 3, September 2015

To make sure of a membership, join now! (Also, please note that people will only be included in programme items if they are members of BCon. If you are interested in becoming a speaker or panellist, join now! It will very helpful as regards programme design if you join BCon sooner rather than later.) Hotel News! As per Progress Report #2, our convention hotel is: HOTEL CATALONIA RAMBLAS (4 star), C/Pelai, 28. We hope that Eurocon members will reserve rooms at the convention hotel itself, or at one of its two partners nearby, because enough reservations mean that the Eurocon will have free rooms for events in the convention hotel.  The hotel group assure us that there will be no cheaper offers of their rooms on the internet. We also hope that members will reserve rooms early, such as now, to encourage the Catalonia hotel group. It costs you nothing to reserve rooms now. You don’t pay for rooms until the convention. (See below.) Room reservations are by email. It’s very important that you that put EUROCON is the subject line of an email. Reserving by email is much more convenient than fighting with an on-line form if you want to modify your booking, and also makes specific requests easier.  The hotels are fully disability compliant. Here you can find the contact details necessary for making your reservations. Please note that...
